IMMORTALITY and
THE STRANGE CASE OF A SPEEDING TRUCK
~ if the title doesn't get you, the picture should ~

Not that I sit, weighed down, morose, pondering over these things (ok who am I kidding . I do ). Sometimes ..you know.. things..like the death of a pet, the expiry of a credit card.. nudges one to contemplate stuff that are crudely metaphysical.

So here goes..
Science today is bursting at the seams. The mind’s capacity for more seems strangely unlimited. Very much like the infinite space around us and the intricate replica within. If the purpose of evolution, or (metaphysical) life, is eventual accessibility to the ultimate truth, why are we housed in such fragile bodies that clearly cannot last long enough to sustain such a quest; Just when we acquire the maturity of mind during adulthood, to be reliably rational, the body promptly commences its physical disintegration. The mind evolves frantically and the body, almost conspiratorially, begins to self-destruct.

Immortality is the future. science will ensure that we get there. sooner than later. In the higher scheme of things, it sure seems that immortality is indeed factored in. Only to immortals can the vast expanse of the universe and time make practical sense. Plus, it no longer sounds or feels like it belongs exclusively to the realm of science fiction. Very do-able.

>The word immortality is restrictive in the human context. by the true definition of the word, its applicable only to the concept of God, who is not only immortal but also deemed insusceptible to any factor that could choose to alter that state. >Immortality, in lesser beings, is the infinite longevity of life, if 'allowed' to run its course. Susceptible perhaps to external agents, like life threatening hazards, the destruction of habitable milieu etc.

A better term would then be the currently in-ishtyle one : Indefinite longevity. Which is to mean that you could someday be scientifically altered to be clinically immortal, i.e., you can live for ever, but hey make sure you don’t get hit by a speeding truck ! In which case, unless the medicine/science of the day saves you. You will be stone dead.

And on this happy note..
